How to Prevent Excessive Diesel Generator Set Temperature in Summer

Update time: 2025-06-12    visits: 1

As summer approaches,  excessively high temperatures in diesel generator sets, especially water-cooled diesel generator sets, often trouble many generator set users. So how can you ensure that the generator set temperature does not become too high? The following recommendations are provided for reference:

1. Use Sealed Coolant Correctly

Most modern diesel engines use a closed cooling system. The radiator cap is sealed, and an expansion tank is added. When the engine is running, coolant vapor enters the expansion tank and, after cooling, flows back into the radiator. This can prevent large evaporation losses of coolant and increase the boiling point of the coolant. This cooling system should use high-quality coolant with anti-corrosion, anti-boiling, anti-freezing, and anti-scale properties, and sealing must be ensured during use in order to achieve the desired results.

2. Keep the Exterior and Interior of the Coolant System Clean
This is an important condition for improving heat dissipation efficiency. If the outside of the radiator is covered with mud or oil, or if the fins are deformed due to impact, air passage will be affected, the radiator heat dissipation effect will decline, and coolant temperature will become too high. Therefore, if this happens to the generator set radiator, it should be cleaned or repaired promptly. In addition, if scale, mud, sand, or oil accumulates in the generator set cooling water tank, heat transfer of the coolant will also be affected. Filling with poor-quality coolant or water will cause more scale to build up in the cooling system, and the heat transfer capability of scale is only a fraction of that of metal, resulting in poor cooling performance. Therefore, high-quality coolant should be added to the cooling system.

3. Maintain Proper Fan Belt Tension

If the fan belt is too loose, the water pump speed will be too low, affecting coolant circulation and accelerating belt wear. But if the belt is too tight, it will wear the water pump bearing. In addition, the belt must not be contaminated with oil. Therefore, the fan belt tension should be checked and adjusted regularly.

4. Avoid Heavy-Load Operation of the Diesel Generator Set
If the engine operates under a very heavy load for too long, it will cause excessively high coolant temperature.

5. Pay Attention to Ventilation in the Generator Room

A good ventilation environment is essential, especially proper exhaust and smoke extraction for the water tank area. Keep the floor clean and free of oil stains, dust, and similar contaminants.
